Coagulation changes during termination of pregnancy by prostaglandins and by vacuum aspiration.

چکیده
Serial studies on coagulation factors were performed on 12 patients having termination of mid-trimester pregnancy by extra-amniotic prostaglandin F(2)alpha and 11 patients terminated by vacuum aspiration during the first trimester. A significant change in the activity of factors V, VII and X, VIII, and X, and a decrease of the prothrombin time and platelet count were found with prostaglandin termination but no such changes occurred during vacuum aspiration. These findings suggest that the coagulation system is activated during induction of mid-trimester abortion with extra-amniotic prostaglandin F(2)alpha. This is probably related to the physiological changes in the coagulation mechanism which occur by the second trimester of pregnancy. Termination of pregnancy in the mid-trimester may, however, be expected to give rise to defective blood coagulation and thromboembolic complications.

Induced abortion may be desired during a normal or abnormal pregnancy. The methods of induced abortion differ between species mainly because of different sources for progesterone production during pregnancy between species and within a species according to different stages of gestation. In cows and buffaloes, pregnancy can be effectively terminated from 5 to 150 days by administration of luteol...

Background Unsafe abortion is a public health problem worldwide. One way of reducing the number of unsafe procedures is to increase safe choices for pregnancy termination. In developed countries, of the 28 million pregnancies occurring every year, 36% end in abortion. In developing countries, of the 182 million pregnancies occurring every year, 20% end in abortion. Almost 80% of all abortions a...
متن کاملManual vacuum aspiration, a safe and effective alternative in early pregnancy termination.
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Vacuum aspiration has become standard surgical procedure for safe early pregnancy termination. Most of these operations are performed in the operating theater using suction curettage and an electric vacuum pump. MVA (manual vacuum aspiration) is an alternative that is well suited for use as a clinical procedure, which could have advantages both for the patient and the h...
متن کاملCervical diameter after suction termination of pregnancy.
The diameter of the internal cervical os was measured in several groups of patients in an attempt to assess any damage caused by suction termination of pregnancy. Pregnant women who had had a previous abortion by vacuum aspiration had significantly greater cervical diameters than those who had not, and there was a statistically significant correlation between dilatation of the cervix at operati...
متن کاملThe effects of intravenous infusion of graded doses of prostaglandins F 2 and E 2 on lung resistance in patients undergoing termination of pregnancy.
1. Lung resistance was measured by the interruptor method in fifteen patients during infusion of prostaglandin E2 or FZa, for termination of pregnancy. 2. Small but significant reversible elevation in lung resistance occurred in patients receiving both prostaglandins; this was an unexpected finding in the case of prostaglandin E2. 3. The changes described were not harmful in normal subjects, bu...
